Moldovan Wine History

With the foundation of the Moldovan feudal state in the 14th century, grape growing developed more rapidly. It flourished in the 15th century during the rule of Stephen the Great — or Stefan cel Mare as he is known locally — who imported new grape varieties and stimulated production of quality wine by creating the position of Paharnic (cup bearer) who’s task was to oversee the vineyards and winemakers to ensure the high quality of wine production. His rule also provided an additional impulse in winemaking by increasing the area under cultivation with wine grapes, by improving technology, and by establishing household wine cellar.

Wine Regions

 

Moldova is divided into four grape growing zones: Northern, Central or Codru, Southeastern and Southern. Each region has its own landscape, climatic, and soil particularities described below...

Grape Varietes

 

Moldovan viticulture can be characterized as continental. The southern half of the country benefits from climate and soil conditions that are favorable for wine production. The latitude is comparable to Bordeaux, France, being intersected by the 47° parallel. Annual hours of sunshine range from 2,100 to 2,500 and rainfall is modest — typically from 350mm to 500mm per year. Its elevation averages from 100 to 300 meters above sea level, although at its highest point, Moldova is 490 meters above sea level...

Wine Cellars

 

In August 2005, Milestii Mici was registered in the Guinness World Records as the biggest wine collection in the world. Overall, the complex holds nearly 2 million bottles. More than 70% of the stored wines are red, 20% are white and about 10% are dessert ones.
